The Plant:
Spikenard is a flowering plant native to the Himalayan mountains of India, Nepal and China, growing at altitudes of up to 5,000 metres. It is one of the oldest known aromatics in the world. Spikenard is mentioned numerous times in the Bible and was one of the most precious and costly substances in the ancient world, used to anoint both kings and the feet of Jesus. The essential oil is steam distilled from the roots and rhizomes of the plant and has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine for its calming, grounding and sedative properties.
