The Plant:
Cananga odorata is a fast-growing tropical tree native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, now widely cultivated across Madagascar, the Comoro Islands and Indonesia. It can grow up to 20 metres tall and produces striking, star-shaped yellow flowers that bloom throughout the year. Distillers produce ylang ylang oil in several fractions, extra, first, second and third, each captured at different stages of distillation with subtly different aromas and properties. The complete oil, as offered here, contains all fractions together and is considered the most therapeutically balanced and versatile form available. The flowers must be harvested early in the morning when their fragrance is at its peak and then distilled within hours of picking to preserve their extraordinary aroma.
