The Plant:
Bergamot is a small citrus tree believed to be a natural hybrid of lemon and bitter orange, widely cultivated in the Calabria region of southern Italy and the Ivory Coast. The fruit resembles a small orange but is yellow-green in colour. It is perhaps best known as the distinctive flavouring in Earl Grey tea. Bergamot essential oil was historically used in French hospitals to ward off airborne bacteria and infections.
