The Plant:
Wintergreen is a small, creeping evergreen shrub native to North America, where it grows in woodland areas and produces bright red berries in winter. It has been used for centuries by Native American peoples to relieve pain and inflammation. Today, producers cultivate it widely across China and steam distil the leaves to produce the essential oil. Wintergreen leaves must first be soaked in warm water before distillation, as this process triggers an enzymatic reaction that releases the oil’s main constituent, methyl salicylate.
