The Plant:
Neroli is steam distilled from the blossom of the bitter orange tree, widely cultivated across Italy, Morocco and Tunisia. The oil takes its name from Anne Marie Orsini, Princess of Nerola in 17th century Italy, who is said to have used it to perfume her gloves and bathwater. Like jasmine, neroli is extraordinarily labour intensive to produce as the blossoms must be handpicked at dawn when their fragrance is at its peak.
