Description

About the Plant:
Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly known as liquorice, is a perennial herb native to Southern Europe and Western Asia, grown in sandy soils where its creeping roots spread in every direction drawing nutrients from deep within the earth. Its name derives from the Greek ‘glukurrhiza’ meaning sweet root. The root contains a plant compound called glycyrrhizic acid which is fifty times sweeter than sugar. Liquorice has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 5,000 years as a soothing, healing and tonifying herb for rejuvenation, and was highly prized by the ancient Greeks and Romans. Furthermore, liquorice is considered an adaptogen meaning it may help the body manage the effects of stress and has consequently been used for centuries to support the nervous system, digestive health and respiratory function.
